Walgreens to Open at Maui Lani Village Center
(May 4, 2012) - Walgreens is moving forward on plans to build a new retail store and pharmacy at the Maui Lani Village Center in Central Maui..
"We're thrilled to have a nationally recognized leader like Walgreens join the Maui Lani Village Center," said Grant Howe, CCIM principal broker at Commercial Properties of Maui who is spearheading brokerage efforts for the commercial project. "For the thousands of residents who live in Maui Lani, Wailuku, Waikapu and other nearby communities, Walgreens' new store will offer a terrific array of products and services in a convenient and accessible location."
Walgreens' store at Maui Lani will offer approximately 15,000 square feet of retail and service space, including a convenient drive-thru pharmacy. An opening date has not been determined, but is currently anticipated to be sometime in 2013.
"With our new store, we look forward to serving local residents of Central Maui and being a community resource for their health and daily living needs," said Lawrence Adler, manager of new store development for Walgreens.
Founded in 1901, Walgreens is one of the fastest growing retailers in America, with more than 7,800 drugstores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. As of February 2012, it offered 11 stores in Hawaii.
In addition to providing retail goods, services and pharmacies, Walgreens operates worksite health centers, home care facilities and specialty, institutional and mail service pharmacies. The company has received a number of awards for its commitment to diversity in the workplace and innovative business practices, including being named among the Top 50 Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities by DiversityBusiness.com and ranked #4 among food and drugstores in Fortune magazine's 2012 list of the World's Most Admired Companies. Fast Company magazine ranked Walgreens as the third most innovative health care company.
A number of other businesses have completed, are in progress, or planning to begin construction of their new facilities at the Maui Lani Village Center, including Marmac Ace Hardware, 76 Gas, Menehune Water, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Wailuku Federal Credit Union and Retina Institute of Hawaii.
"The Maui Lani Village Center is going to offer a diverse range of commercial opportunities, including retail, financial services, medical facilities, warehouses and more," said Ben Walin, CCIM R B of Commercial Properties. "Its central location in between Kahului and Wailuku will make it easier for customers to get there, shop, fill up gas, receive medical care, take care of their
financial needs and much more."
The Maui Lani Village Center's mixed-use zoning allows for a broad range of uses, giving companies valuable flexibility to evolve their operations over time without undergoing potentially onerous zoning changes. Examples of permissible uses include restaurants,
educational facilities, grocery stores, retail shops, professional offices, light manufacturing and processing, medical facilities, recreation centers, warehouses, self-storage businesses and even single- or multi-family residences. For sole practitioners and smaller businesses, a special area within the project called Professional Row offers ready-built and affordable fee simple ownership.
